What Is Anticipatory Grief?
It’s normal to feel grief even before a loved one passes. Many families search, “Why do I feel like I’m already grieving?” Anticipatory grief occurs in prolonged illness, terminal diagnoses, or palliative care situations, blending sadness, anxiety, and even relief.
Common emotions include guilt for feeling exhausted, frustration, anger at illness, and worry about the future. Recognising these feelings as normal can prevent additional emotional strain.
Caregivers often face burnout in hospice care, with physical, mental, and emotional stress compounding the grief. Support is essential.
The Grief After provides resources and guidance for families, helping them prepare emotionally so that, when the time comes, they can be present, connected, and supportive without being overwhelmed.
